Reduction and simplification are at the heart of Vode's design philosophy. While it requires greater effort to miniaturize products, this commitment leads to significant benefits. By reducing size, materials, and weight, we not only create more elegant solutions but also reduce adverse environmental impacts. Smaller products can lead to reduced environmental impact as they require less raw material and energy throughout their lifecycle, from extraction and manufacturing to transportation and end-of-life processing.

Embodied Carbon and Product Weight
 
Product weight plays a pivotal role in determining carbon emissions, notably during materials production and transportation. At Vode, we place a strong emphasis on lightweight design, recognizing its significant environmental benefits. By meticulously considering the full lifecycle of our products, from the initial design phase to the final delivery, we strive to minimize our carbon footprint and promote sustainability. Our commitment to lightweight design not only reduces emissions during materials production and transport but also reflects our dedication to creating environmentally conscious lighting solutions.
Materials and their sourcing greatly impact a product's embodied carbon.
At Vode, we prioritize sustainable materials, and also the certification of such, from the responsible sourcing stage to the responsible use stage.

Primary vs. Recycled Aluminum
 
Producing recycled aluminum emits 94% less carbon than producing new or primary aluminum. By the end of 2026, we aim to achieve a significant milestone by transitioning to 100% low carbon aluminum extrusions for our luminaires. The low carbon aluminum we use contains 75% post-consumer recycled content, greatly reducing the carbon footprint of our products. This shift not only reduces our reliance on new or raw materials but also helps close the loop on aluminum production, fostering a more circular economy and further lowering our overall carbon emissions.

The recyclability of Vode's products plays a pivotal role in minimizing environmental impact, as they are designed with minimal adhesives, facilitating easy disassembly. This not only enhances the efficiency of recycling processes but also promotes a circular economy by enabling the reuse of materials. By achieving almost 100% recyclability at the end of life, reducing waste, and conserving resources for a greener future.

Transparent Reporting
 
Vode places great importance on transparently reporting our sustainability efforts, particularly through initiatives like the LBC Declare Program. This program provides consumers with clear information about our products' ingredients, fostering trust and confidence. Transparent reporting aligns with green building and product standards such as DLC, LBC, LEED, RoHs, and TM65 demonstrating our commitment to environmental responsibility and supporting broader sustainability goals.

Ultimately, I answer to my daughter, Rachael, and her generation. If I can reduce the amount of energy needed to provide light and, at the same time, minimize my impact on the environment, that's good for her.
